- A local voluntary organisation with company status.
- Although affiliated to Royal Mencap, the Society is totally financially independent. and takes full responsibility for ensuring that resources are available to fund all activities.
What does Southampton Mencap do?
- It seeks to improve the lives of people of all ages with learning disabilities and their families or carers living in Southampton.
- It provides a variety of services including a wide range of age appropriate leisure activities for children/young people and adults, summer programme of activities, open meetings/carers lunches, and information and advice
- Works with statutory authorities and other voluntary organisations to identify and deliver services and to monitor, assess and research gaps in services.
- Advocates and campaigns with and on behalf of people with learning disabilities.

The society has its own large purpose built Centre in Portswood which is used as the base for most activities. In addition, Southampton Mencap manage a variety of projects, and Summer Schemes, which are based off site.

We also employ approximately 25 Support Workers for our:-
Social Clubs || Summer Activities || Opening Doors Service
and have up to a twenty volunteers involved within the organisation.
- Directly provide social activities for people of all ages with a learning disability which maximise their opportunity for inclusion in a meaningful manner.
- Respond to the needs of families of people with a learning disability in a flexible and appropriate manner and enable them to have short breaks from their caring responsibilities.
- Deliver timely, appropriate and up-to-date information and advice on a range of issues relating to learning disability.
